I'd add in a trolley tour too Storm - you can get off and on all day long if you want - and it takes you through Embassy Row - loved that part! Great way to see monuments.
And yes, you need at least 2-3 days for a good tour of the museums!

I want longer to go to the museums! One day isn't enough for all that! Well, truth be told, you could probably spend several days in both Natural History and American History. Oh, and Air and Space has an Imax in, now...we went there to see The Force Awakens. Leyapearl, they also give tours of some of the federal buildings. Went to the Bureau of Printing and Engraving once to see money being made. While there, there was an accident with the cutting machine, which sent several thousand dollars worth of mis-cut money to the souvenir shop. Also, the Washington Cathedral is not to be missed, both the exterior gardens and the interior.

Air and Space has an Imax??!! ::SQUEAK!::
Still mad I didn't get to see Rogue One in the Imax in Nashville -- Pat was out of town and he saw it when he was in Orlando. ::huffs:: We WILL see the next one there - or else someone will get hurt! Muahahahahahaha...

Hmm, well if we had to stay right in my town, I'd say the botanical garden and a quirky lunch in a giant armoire, but assuming you're game for a 3 hour road trip, then it's over to the mountain for an upscale day at the Biltmore (everyone goes for the mansion, am I the only one who goes for the gardens and the bass pond and the azaleas, and the kayak down the French Broad river. House shmouse, let's get outside!) and then a 'downscale' day over a section of the Appalachian trail near here that doubles as mash up of a rhododendron grove and the set for Jurassic Park - serious step out of this century, or maybe millennium. Gorgeous. Or we could just sail around the lake at Butler TN, Austin's probably been there, actually. Nice place to get a pontoon boat and a stack of books about a foot thick for the week. Have I mentioned I'm an outdoor girl?

Ooo, the Biltmore! I was there once, that was amazing! But it was winter, so it was the indoors for us. Pontooning, though, that's fun. My family used to rent a pontoon boat for a day, back when we all used to vacation up in Wisconsin. Probably not as relaxing as yours; we had a lot of young'uns taking control, testing how fast we could go and getting the hang of steering.

Well, for the first day I would take you into D.C. We would go to the museums on the mall- Air and Space, Natural History, American History, the art museum. Then on day 2 we'd go see all the monuments- Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, The Wall, the Kennedy Center and Roosevelt Island. For day 3, we'd go to Great Falls national park and climb-walk around for a couple hours. Might see some kayakers and canoeists shooting the rapids, if we were lucky. Then, if you still had any energy, we'd take the 3-hour drive to the Shenandoah mountains, Skyline Drive and Luray caverns. That'd be days 4 and 5, we'd probably have to stay overnight at Big Meadows. And after all that you'd probably need another vacation. And so might I, actually! I want longer to go to the museums! One day isn't enough for all that! You've made me remember how much I loved living in D.C. and how much I miss it. I need to go back for a long weekend. And you're right JD, one day is not enough for the museums!

Just realised that this year I will be experiencing the Lucille Ball Festival of Comedy for the first time. My office is situated right on the street they use for it. Some of the photos from the crowds right outside the holding look a tad daunting for this country gal.
Although to be honest, I'm not really looking forward to the crazy parking and traffic rerouting that will be happening that week........

No, it doesn't sound especially enticing!

It will be great for those who want to go, don't get me wrong. We locals tend to avoid the city during LucyFest the way my uncle in New Orleans tries to avoid the Mardi Gras areas.
