I mean, I get that it could change and any moment, but at the same time, due to the precautions and the fact i mostly stayed in my room, I would think the chances of catching it would be rather low. I still wore it for the precaution factor, but it felt a bit silly, especially when I had to wear it when I went to walk around the halls, mere moments after finding out it was negative (which was the same day the test was taken, and I hadn't left the room until that moment). Anyway. I guess it probably makes the other people feel more comfortable, if nothing else. It's not like they knew I had just tested negative.

I just went through the Drive Thru at McDonald's. I felt like a big shot because I was the only one in line I could see wearing a mask.

Exactly. And if they make exceptions for you, they have to make exceptions for everyone, and that's how you break daily infection records. There's also the question of how reliable the test is that they use; some are more prone to falses than others.
Most of the health care workers who've become infected aren't the ones working with the diagnosed Covid patients; they're the ones working with the general population, because the PPE hasn't been as tight. So cracking down on it really is necessary.

So cracking down on it really is necessary. I suppose like anything it is faulty. Although it's been over 3 weeks since the test and I never had any symptoms, so im thinking it was correct. But by now, who knows lol. Although my county has been doing exceptionally well. We currently have 0 cases, so the only exposure chance I'd have is if I've come into contact with an infected traveler. But since I'm not still working (I used to work at a campground), those chances are much lower than they were before.

I just thank heaven I live in a reasonably sensible state. But then, we got solidly virus-slapped through March and April, so people are cautious. We went into phase three and we've started seeing the uptick, so the governor's talking about relocking some things to get the numbers down again. My county was seeing the worst of it (heaviest population density in the state) but since we had such a bad spring, we're still being careful and haven't seen the increase that the rest of the state has.
There are certainly days when I wish I wasn't working, but my main worry is for family, especially the parental units, who are all between 65 and 80, and for my aunt and uncle in Florida. :sighs: And then I hear a friend and his family are still planning to take a week in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, at the end of July. I feel like shaking some sense into them. The beach will be there next year; why not be safe and make sure *you all* are still around next year, too??? :grump:

The rest of my state hasn't been quite as lucky, especially over on the eastern side where all the big cities are. But where I am, the population density is fairly low and I think that's how we've managed to get away with very low numbers. The entire county maxed at like 50 and here in my town, I think it was like 5? And they've all recovered, and so has most of the county. We're also in phase 3 of reopening, and not the county only saw a very small uptick. Here in town, we didn't see any.

That'll do it, the low density. Glad you got off so lightly; we're looking at 75,000+ infected. My county accounts for almost 15,000 of those; the next-closest county is in at 8,000. We just had a bunch of guidelines put down for the return-to-work process; I'm hoping it helps, but I dunno. Just two days ago in my store, I saw one customer with their mask down around their chin to talk to the person beside them as they rolled their cart from one side of the store to the other. I get it, it's hot, it's sweaty, it's not comfortable, it makes having a conversation a little difficult- but it's half an hour in the blasted store and the point is everyone's health. So wear the freakin' mask properly already! They should try doing it for a six to eight hour shift like we grocery employees have to. They wouldn't fuss so much about an hour or less in a public place then. :grumbling:

I went out to a large hardware store to buy an air conditioner. It wasn't too bad. I got a freshly sanitized shopping cart, everyone was wearing masks and I didn't have to get close to anyone. There they were air conditioners. I went down there. A store guy was talking to a couple. I went down and got the thing off the shelf and I realized that those two cretins weren't wearing masks.
"I don't see how you can make someone wear a mask if they don't want to," the dumb slob said. He said something about having a compromised immune system.
The store guy was being way too polite.
The air conditioner was $50 less than what they had on Amazon, so if I don't suffer any ill-effects from being in the store it will have been a pretty good deal.

The chances are pretty low that you will, especially if you maintain sanitary practices yourself. That goes a long way for protecting oneself. Just consider yourself lucky that most people were wearing a mask. Around here, it's a 50/50 chance, and in a hardware store it's probably 10/90 (10% chance they will be wearing one lol). Of course, like I mentioned before, we've had very low numbers so it probably isn't as important here either.

I had two guys in my store just yesterday unmasked. My first reaction was to immediately walk away from them, which I did, and my second was to wonder why the person at the entrance didn't have them mask up. We not only have signs up, we have it on in-store radio that masks are required indefinitely. Made me realize I don't know what the procedure for a maskless customer is, since I haven't run into anyone noncompliant lately.
Unfortunately, asking people to mask up has ended quite badly for some workers, so I can understand being 'polite' to someone who's being a jerk about it. But anyone who is immune-compromised and not wearing a mask is considerably more than a jerk; they're also being a covidiot who's more likely to get themself a severe or fatal case than most. I do make allowance for people with genuine medical issues such as asthma, emphysema, etc, but the ones who refuse a safety measure simply to be a donkey's hind end make me steam.

I don't know about where you live, but here, the police/sheriff's departments have stated they won't be enforcing the mask mandate issued by the governor. Which I understand, they have better things to do (i.e., actual emergencies). But because they're not enforcing it, there isn't much the stores can do to enforce it either. Most have a policy of requesting you wear one but won't ask you to leave if you refuse. Personally I'm just ready for all the bologna to be done.

"I always wear a mask when I go outside. But something about it was leaving me anxious and unsettled. I thought about the problem, addressed it, and here is the solution."

Lol, I guess that's one way to do it! A family friend makes masks, and even customizes them according to school colors for the kids. She'll even stitch the student's name onto the mask if you request it; which I imagine makes things immensely easier for the poor teachers who are now unable to identify students by their facial features.

We won't be answering the door for trick or treaters this year so it's hard to figure out how many bags of candy I should buy.

:chuckles: We haven't had trick-or-treaters in several years; the kids in the area mainly attend parties at the local high school and elementary school. (And wander around in certain open businesses to get a handout as well.) And yet the candy sells like crazy; the seasonal stuff flies out and generally the bagged section of the regular candy sells empty as well. Some years even the (early) Christmas candy start selling down!
All of which tells me it's not necessarily the kids who're getting it, especially when the adults get all disappointed that there's none left to go half-off. : D

We only get my nephew's three kids as trick-or-treaters, so they get full-size candy bars [as does their mother, who brings them]. I buy candy corn and suchlike, to have around during October and we all eat that.

I used to be convinced that the white tip of the candy kernel tasted different, sweeter, than the rest of it. Now I'm thinking it was a texture thing.

It may be a texture thing, but I wouldn't be surprised if the original ones -- well, the stuff that was around when I was a kid, anyway -- actually did have different flavors for the differently-colored layers.

And these days they do have them in different flavors, to my amazement (and possibly, horror. Which is suitable for the time of year...) Flavors of candy corn: pumpkin spice (of course), cinnamon, S'mores, caramel apple, spice candy (whatever that is), mint, blackberry cobbler, sea-salt chocolate, green apple, sour patch (complete with sugar crystals), strawberry, and cookie. These are all on a site for the 'Candy Warehouse'. Then Brach's has this 'turkey dinner' candy corn, which apparently gives you 'all the traditional Thanksgiving favorites'. "Flavors include Green Beans, Roasted Turkey, Cranberry Sauce, Ginger Glazed Carrot, Sweet Potato Pie & Stuffing." I'm definitely horrified. And confused; Halloween is NOT Thanksgiving. There is one thing that looks half-decent, though: mini candy corn and chocolate peanuts.

...! You know, it suddenly reminds me of Willy Wonka's special gum. The one that's tomato soup, baked potato, roast beef and blueberry pie. Except he's not got it quite right on the blueberry part, as Violet soon finds out.
Yeah, definitely avoiding that candy corn. I don't want to turn into a sweet potato.
