I recently had a visit from the Ghost of Annoying Songs Past. I ended up hearing some of Don't Worry, Be Happy, and had the pop culture equivalent of a Vietnam flashback. I couldn't stand that song back in the Eighties, and it probably grinds my gears even worse today. What songs would you prefer never to cross paths with again?

I've absolutely hated that song from the first time I heard it. I still hate it! I also hate rap and anything remotely connected. And most "modern" pop music, which isn't music at all, just shouting with a back beat. I don't like hearing opera SUNG, but there are a lot of pretty overtures to operas that I do like!

There's a sappy sentimental little ditty about a 'Little Fly' that I hate because, one, I don't like flies, and two, the singer repeatedly declares that "You're a lot like I." GRAARGH. "No one could say that you don't have a soul". FLIES DON'T HAVE SOULS. There, I said it.
There's one about 'buried in a coal mine' which is typically a rather depressing subject, but the singer apparently feels pretty upbeat about the whole business of suffocating in the dark and goes on about it in a very laid-back fashion. I hate that.
One I have heard a few times lately that just mystifies me: I can't make sense of the verses, but the chorus seems to consist of the line "I've heard of Tourette's" over and over. Yes, well, so have many people; what's your point?
Oh, and the one about 'my heart could use some glasses'; apparently the singer's heart is so 'dyslexic', it can't figure out what's going on in the relationship. Obviously his cardiac system has vision problems. /facepalm
I hear all these at work, so I don't have titles or artist names- and frankly, don't want 'em!

I've lost touch with pretty much any popular music from years starting with 2. I mostly listen to classical music and film score albums. Not soundtracks with songs, the orchestral scores. The pop music I listen to is mostly from the 60s to 80s. Your list of dislikes matches mine, Fflur. I've always thought rap music was missing a "c" at the beginning. The fact that it's more enthusiastic admirers insist on blasting it at volumes that rattle dental fillings doesn't help. JD, I'm not a fan of opera singing either, but the orchestral overtures are nice. I watched a TV show years ago where the overture from Wagner's Parsifal was used as part of one episode's score. I hadn't heard it before, but picked up a CD of overtures, including Parsifal, soon afterwards because of that show.

I don't know. There was this Charlie Rich song, but I don't want to talk about it.

HATE rap! That's the only genre that I hate as a whole.
A few songs that I remember hearing over and over and over on the office radio (that I wasn't allowed to change stations) was George Jones singing "She stopped loving her today" and Tammy Wynette's "Stand by your man". Every hour they played those songs...
And John Anderson's "Swingin'". Oh how I hated that voice!!

Anything with a heavy beat sets my teeth on edge. We were at a restaurant in Murrells Inlet that had such a loud rock beat on every single song, I wanted to rip the speakers off the wall. Otherwise, I admit to loving 'Don't Worry, Be Happy' ( ) I hate rap! (it's NOT music!). I don't like hard rock, stoner rock, etc, etc... And there is a certain Beach Boys song - if I hear it - or someone sings it to me - I get violent. Just be warned.

I agree, rap is not music, it's just shouting over a beat. I had the misfortune to be introduced to rap via a...very former friend in high school, who played 2Live Crew more often than I like to think about. I thought for a while that I was being biased about rap in general due to that particular filth, but, nah. But I do love a good strong drumbeat. One of my current favorites (Love Runs Out by One Republic) has both a solid 4-beat drum and a slightly lighter 2-beat rhythm, and I love it! Hard rock, no. Hard drums, oh indeed. Maybe my Celtic background...

Shane : Country Rap = C-Rap = Crap music. Lol. Rap should probably be written as an acronym. R.a.p. = Raucous aural pain.

I usually admire music from any genre. There is a ton of artistry in rap, hip-hop, and rhythm and blues. I also like music that I grew up on - classic and nineties country, classic rock (Boston, Foreigner, Journey, Kansas, etc.). I love electronic music - anything from that classic Detroit sound to much more modern stuff like Todd Terje. I like pop from any era, classic Doo woo stuff all the way through the Mamas and the Papas, Michael Jackson, and even Backstreet Boys!! :-P
There are some artists that I in general don't like, mostly because of their politics or attitude in general. If anything about Taylor Swift comes on, I immediately turn it off!!

I have fairly eclectic taste in music. I like blues, jazz, classical, classic rock, folk, klezmer, zydeco. There are also about a dozen disco songs I like and about the same number of country songs I'll listen to. That said if "The Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald" comes on, I will immediately switch stations - same goes for "Angie" by the Rolling Stones.
