Many years ago, I was driving my mother to see Don Knotts and Tom Conway live on stage.
"There was a guy lying on the sidewalk," I said.
I went around the block and stopped. There was a guy lying there half on the sidewalk, half on the grass. He looked terrible,
My mother had a relatively early cell phone and called 911. The guy looked dead to me. But the operator wanted me to talk to him and see if he responded. I didn't want to talk to a dead guy, but I said, "You okay there?" and the dead guy sat up and got up and staggered around, then asked if I had any spare change. We were late and a police car had pulled up, so we went on our way.
So a couple of weeks ago, there was a guy lying on the sidewalk. So I stopped and got out. I went and talked to him. I don't know why he was on the sidewalk. There was grass a few feet away if he wanted to lie somewhere. I don't know what was wrong with him, but he wasn't dying so I gave him a couple of bucks and left.
Then, a week later, I was driving down the street and there was this guy sitting there leaning against a fence, slumped over. He was breathing. I stopped and talked to him and got no response, so I called 911. They said they already got a call about him and would send someone to check on him. I hung up and woman came along. She was more assertive. I didn't want to touch the guy but she shook him to wake him up. He sort of woke up and said he was fine, he didn't need any help and went back to sleep.
I don't want to drive past someone dying in the street, but I should probably leave these people alone and let them sleep.
