My mother wanted to watch a movie, so I poked around on Roku and found I Passed for White (1960). A young woman marries rich WASP James Franciscus without telling him she's Black. When she runs into her darker-complected jazz musician brother, Franciscus attacks him. "KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF MY WIFE!"
He's rich, and he's James Franciscus, but what does she see in him?
It wasn't very good, so I turned on a related second feature, Lost Boundaries, made in the late '40's. A doctor and his wife pass for white in a small New England town. He becomes a prominent member of the community. But then he enlists in the Navy which had a severe shortage of doctors during World War Two. But until the late '40's, Blacks in the Navy could only serve as Mess Attendants. A Naval Intelligence officer comes to their house. They investigated him and found he had been in an African-American fraternity in college. "Do you have Negro blood?"
Word spreads around town that the family is Black.
The daughter's boyfriend tells her, "They're saying your family is Negro!'
"Are they saying anything bad about us?"
