If reading the above makes you think it kind of sounds like an HB film (in an alternate universe where Frank is older and an only child), I can confirm that it totally works to approach it like that
It's in that weird place between "has funny moments, but not a comedy" and "not so dark and depressing that it's not enjoyable" - and it's only 1h40, so even if you don't love it it's not too long.
For those of you who used to watch The OC, like me, the "Frank" is played by Adam Brody, which I admit is a reason I watched it
