So to put it bluntly, work has been hell lately. (Big thank you to my buddy and writing partner Cheryl, who has listened patiently to all my work woes!). Anyway, this was a conversation I had at work the other day: As I’m getting my purse, keys and putting on sunglasses… Teresa: “Have a nice lunch.” Me: “I’m not going to lunch. Running to the liquor store. I need a bottle of wine. It’s been a rough week.” Leah: “You know you can get wine at Wegman’s.” (A grocery store across the street) Me: “No you can’t.” Leah and Teresa: “Yes you can!” Leah: “They sell wine and beer.” Me: “No they don’t. I was in there last week looking for wine and they don’t sell it.” Leah: “Yes, they do. I bought some. Wine and beer only. It’s right next to the Pub area.” Me, thinking… : “Oh. Wait. Never mind. Last week I was buying vodka, not wine.” Leah and Teresa look at each other. Leah says: “Last week vodka. This week wine…” Teresa: “This place is driving her to drink.” Fast forward fifteen minutes… I’ve got my bottle of wine and I’m getting back into my car. A car pulls into the parking space next to me. I glance up as the person gets out of the car and walks into the liquor store. I recognize them as a fellow employee… ‘Nuff said. I keep telling myself only 7 years until I can retire!!!

You poor thing. I feel absolutely terrible for you, but I have to say-- your sense of description and sense of humor always come through so clearly in your posts. I want to give you a hug for reassurance and then go and drink some (maybe more than some) wine with you!!!!
Hope things start to settle down soon!

Perhaps I can make you feel better. I REALLY do love my job but I'm also getting older and the thought of retiring in 10 years is wonderful... To bad it won't happen until I'm 72. That means I've got 22 more years to go. Divorce sucks in so many ways. One way is how it completely screws up your finances.

Oh, good Lord, yes it does... I'm lucky in that I still get to retire in 15 years. If a couple of my co-workers don't drive me insane first, that is...

Leya? Try this: 2 cups vanilla ice cream 1 cup milk 1 cup each of sliced strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries/raspberries 1/2 cup of blackberry liquour, raspberry rum, or other berry-flavored rum/liquour (optional, for kid-friendly) Toss everything in a blender, puree until smooth. Instant summer smoothie, with a nice alcohol kick to help relax from work. Roughly 4 servings, depending on how big your glass is.

I'd substitute some malt powder for the alcohol, but otherwise that sounds heavenly. And like it would help me ignore my less-cooperative colleagues...

JD, "good" is a distinct understatement.
Leya, no need for malt powder. Just drop the alcohol part entirely for a regular fruit milkshake/smoothie. I haven't been able to use alcohol in the recipe for a couple years now, myself. Oh, and the fruit can be changed around for personal taste, too. Strawberries are too rough on my system for me to use, so we've been upping the blueberries or using just bananas or fresh peaches.
Another good drink, if you're feeling a bit adventurous -- my husband's favorite, and I loved it until I had to cut it from my allowed list: 1 1/2 cups water 1/4 cup fresh basil leaves 1 lemon, peeled and halved 4 strawberries, hulled 4 Tbsp honey (optional, or just sweeten to taste) 1/2 cup ice cubes
Toss everything in blender & puree until frothy. It's one of those recipes where you kinda go "huh?" when you read it, and it surprises you with how tasty it is. But it's a good cooler thingie for those hot, stress-out days.

Oooh, that does sound quite tasty. I even have strawberries, honey, and basil in my garden this year! I'll have to try it and just see if the basil hype is worth it.

Zen, that recipe sounds good! I'll have to try it - on my alcohol free days. So... ever have one of those "Oh no" moments when you realize you shouldn't have said that? I thought I had one today, but luckily it turned out okay. Got in to work, joking with my co-workers Me: "I'll have to go to the liquor store at lunchtime. That bottle of wine I bought last week is gone and you know I need my wine after a day in this place!" Turn around and who is standing next to my desk? Jamie, the Section Manager (my boss's boss!) who has flown in from Arizona for his monthly visit. "Oh... hi, Jamie. Didn't see you there." Fast forward to late afternoon, Jamie is walking by and stops at my desk Jamie: "Did you get your wine?" Me: "Yup!" Jamie: "Where is it?" Me: "In the car. Figured it wasn't a good idea to bring it in here even if I wasn't drinking it!" Jamie: "You probably should have snuck it in. It's so hot out there today it might explode!" (We're having record heat this week). And this is why I like Jamie! We went on to discuss the crazy ridiculous kind of heat they get in Phoenix and how Jamie was so happy to come to Pennsylvania where it was "only 95" so he could cool off! LOL!

Yipes. Those higher-ups need to wear bells on their collars or something... Never had one quite like that, but I did once tell the Regional Director- the one in charge of ALL the district managers in our region- 'Don't get too close!' when he came down the aisle to introduce himself. He froze in mid-step, looking wary, and I explained that I was just getting over rather nasty cold and didn't want to infect him. Then he introduced himself, and I went /internal facepalm.
Having that heatwave too, of course, but y'know, better 95 with humidity than 120 without it!

C'est drool... I can't do ice cream on the diet but wow does that sound good!!! How DO you guys come up with these awesome recipes? Rokia, is it a sugar thing? You might be able to sub frozen yogurt. The fruit smoothie is from Cooking Light; we sub to that every now and then (whenever we have free cash) or my mom gives us stacks of the mags from her sub. We've gotten any number of awesome recipes from it, and rarely hit a bad one. The basil-strawberry lemonade is actually from a wonderful local restaurant here (Cap City Diner, for anyone who happens to be in the Columbus area). They shared the recipe with us when we asked. Heh. Maybe not explode, but turned to vinegar (even worse).

Well, it's partly the sugar thing but mostly it's the POINTS on Weight Watchers. There ARE some Weight Watchers Ice cream bars (they're small but oh so tasty) I can have for 4 pts... and well worth all 4 of those points too might I add... (I have meant to check out frozen yogurt! I have a mean yogurt habit, lol).

That's where I get stuck with Weight Watchers. I can't eat artificial sweeteners. I seem to be allergic to aspartame, and sucralose doesn't agree with me at all. Ice cream is delicious, but so pointy! Doesn't stop me from eating it, though.
That said, a tbl of chocolate chips is only 3 points. And mighty good.

I don't really eat artificial sweeteners much anymore either -- except those lovely ice cream bars... and occasional 'sugar-free' popsicles.

If I'm going for 30 years to retirement in the state retirement system, I have 12.5 years to go. Bummer. I'll probably go out earlier than that because I don't think my nerves can handle it that long. However, what I've got to keep an eye on is the health insurance. My job's is better than hubbies so I need to stay where I am as long as possible to keep the better insurance. But maybe I can find a different job with good health insurance.
I'm sorry that your work is so stressful Alaina! That's awful. Most of my co-workers are alright, it's the 'customers' that I have on a regular basis that are the problem.
